Training - Frequently Asked Questions

Whoa, Friday night and all day Saturday plus three weeknights is a big commitment– am I reading that right?

You are! And yes, it is a big commitment that we understand will not be right for everyone. But we have designed an intentionally immersive program. This training doesn’t just familiarize you with the Sacred Reckonings process. It allows you to experience the disorientation of decentering whiteness and practice the messiness and uncertainty of traveling the road to collective liberation. Your small group will leave equipped to lead the Sacred Reckonings process in your church, supported by a cohort of other Sacred Reckonings leaders.

I’m really excited to join a cohort and can make most of the classes, but I have a conflict for one of the dates. Can I still attend?

We totally understand that our world is one of parallel commitments and that you need to honor yours. If you have a conflict with one of the dates, please select a different cohort so that you’ll be able to attend the full class.

Different dates work best for different people in our small group. Can we “bridge” a single small-group payment over more than one training cohort?

No, the group rate only applies to small groups signing up for one training cohort. If you’re not able to get everyone to the same training cohort, you’ll need to pay for the additional training. This has pros and cons. You won’t get the same internal-cohesion experience across more than one cohort, but you will get exposure to a broader external support network.

We have a sister church that would like to do this work with us. Can two churches join for the same training fee?

We love that you are already building out your community of support! However, your two churches are on different paths with different people, histories, and dynamics. You’ll be doing separate exercises at the training and both churches need to submit separate tuition payments to enroll.

The sacred reckonings guide is a really big PDF. Will you have copies for us at the training?

No. You should prepare to interact with the material in the manner that is most comfortable for you—onscreen, as a single- or double-sided printout, etc. Your most robust Sacred Reckonings experience will be onscreen because you can click directly into linked material. If you prefer a hard copy, please print it before you come to class. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can upload it to an Office Max or similar printing store.

The dates that work best for me are online, but I prefer an in-person experience. Can you shift some of the online work to in-person?

No. We so understand that everyone learns differently, and that a whole day of zoom is really not a good option for some folx. For other folx, online is the only accessible option because of health or distance limitations. Please join the cohort that best suits you or your group’s needs.

I told my pastor/small group leader/one of the trainers that I’m coming. Do I still need to fill out the registration form?

Yes please! The form captures important information that the trainers need to prepare and ensures that you’re on the email distribution list for reminders, homework, and updates. Filling it out is the only way to be sure we’re all on the same page.

Why do we need the training if we already have the PDF?

You’re the expert on your congregation. Sacred Reckonings teaches you a process, not a product, and if your small group is already skilled at organizing and navigating race, you might not need the training. That’s great! If you are not community organizers or are not practiced at having conversations about race, the Sacred Reckonings training will help you practice key tools and exercises with real-time feedback in the context of the Sacred Reckonings reparations framework.
